About Koktokay National Geopark

Koktokay National Geopark is located in the Altay Prefecture of northern Xinjiang, China, along the northern edge of the Altay Mountains near the Altay City. The park covers an extensive area characterized by complex geological structures, including rare mineral deposits, colorful rock formations, hot springs, and deep river gorges. The geopark is famous for its rich deposits of colorful minerals such as malachite and chrysocolla, making it a historic mining area with origins tracing back centuries. Visitors to Koktokay can explore valleys carved by rivers, granite outcrops, and unique karst landscapes that illustrate the area's intricate geological evolution, spanning from the Precambrian era to recent sedimentary deposits. The area supports a variety of flora and fauna native to the region's temperate forest-steppe ecotone.

Recreationally, Koktokay offers hiking and trekking through pristine valleys and mountain ridges, nature photography focused on vibrant minerals and rugged scenery, hot spring bathing, and cultural encounters with local Kazakh and Mongol communities. Notable landmarks include the colorful mineral museum, the Koktokay River Canyon, and the thermal hot springs which attract visitors year-round. The park's striking natural beauty combined with its scientific significance appeals to geologists, nature enthusiasts, and cultural tourists alike, providing an immersive experience into both nature and natural history.

As one of China's designated national geoparks, Koktokay has benefited from conservation efforts aimed at preserving its unique geological heritage and landscape integrity while promoting sustainable tourism development.
